Polycystic ovarian syndrome is a condition of chronic anovulation with resultant infertility.
Sign/symptoms
1-obesity.
2- Skin disorders due to peripheral androgen excess, including hirsutism and acne, are common.(pcos is one of the most common causes of hirsutism in women).
3-infertulity.
4-menstrual disorder (from amen orrhea to menorrhagia).
Investigations-
A-medical history, including menstrual periods and weight changes.
B-physical exam will show excess hair growth, and acne.
C-USG of pelvis.
Management-
1- For irregular bleeding and hirsutism-OCPs will lowers the level of testosterone and normalize her bleeding, progestin component will prevent endometrial hyperplasia.
2- For infertility. If she desires pregnancy, ovulation induction can be achieved through clomiphene citrate (Clomid) or human menopausal gonadotropin (HMG; Pergonal).
3-Metformin, a hypoglycemic agent that increases can enhance the likelihood of ovulation both with and without clomiphene.
